Hoof

Favorite Supplement: Farrier's Formula® Double Strength

Reasons: Farrier's Formula is well-known in the equestrian community, and for good reason! This supplement not only utilizes typical hoof-supporting ingredients such as biotin, but it also provides phospholipids, omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins, minerals, and amino acids. Together, these ingredients can more effectively address hoof issues from the inside out. It has an added bonus of skin and coat support, too! The "double strength" formula ensures your horse is getting plenty of the essential nutrients they need to address weak hooves and the problems that come along with them. For the level of ingredients in this formula, it is relatively economical and also comes in easy to feed pellets that are perfect for picky eaters.

Amount Per Day/Price: Feed 1/2 cup daily at $70 for 60 day supply. This comes out to $1.17 per day for 1000lb horse.

Coat

Favorite Supplement: Horse Guard Flaxen Flow

Reasons: I really like Horse Guard as a company. They are family based and they also put a lot of time and research into creating well-formulated (and palatable!) equine supplements. Flaxen Flow is made from cold-pressed, unfiltered, and nitrogen-protected flaxseeds so you can be sure that valuable nutrients were not lost through heat and other processing methods. Flaxseeds are a great source of omega-3 fatty acids that not only promote skin and coat health but also help reduce inflammation while supporting the brain, heart, and nervous system. Omega-3s really are an all-around supplement. Flaxen Flow also comes in really smart packaging, with an easy-to-use, leak-free dispenser and holes at the top of the bag for carrying. This pouch is also air-tight, ensuring the oil stays fresh for maximum nutrient value.

Amount Per Day/Price: Top dress 1-2oz per day onto your horse's feed. The 3L bag provides a 50-100 day supply, either $0.68 or $0.34 a day.

Joint

Favorite Supplement: Lubrigen Joint, Tendon, and Ligament Supplement

Reasons: Uckele is a comprehensive company making products for not only horses but dogs and humans as well. Lubrigen particularly stands out to me due to the wide range and high levels of important ingredients. Glucosamine and chondroitin promote healthy joint structure while ingredients such as MSM, Boswellia, and Yucca help to reduce inflammation. Hydrolyzed collagen has been boasted in recent years to support skin, hair, and joint health as well. Hyaluronic acid encourages comfortable joint movement through lubrication while Grape Seed Extract functions as an antioxidant. Rounded out with calcium, amino acids, and more, this supplement really hits all the targets for joint support.

Amount Per Day/Price: Feed 30-60g daily. The bucket provides a 30-60 day supply, coming out to $0.50-$1.00 per day.

Probiotic

Favorite Supplement: Omega Alpha Biotic 8

Reasons: Omega Alpha is another company that makes a variety of both horse and human products. What's impressive about this supplement is that it not only provides a range of probiotic strains but it also has a prebiotic as well as stomach soothing ingredients such as Slippery Elm and Marshmellow Root. You'll also find enzymes that assist in breaking down food in the digestive tract, further supporting a healthy digestive system. Finished with flax, kelp, and spirulina that are full of omega-3s and antioxidants, Biotic 8 really is a comprehensive approach to facilitating a healthy gut which means a healthier horse.

Amount Per Day/Price: Feed 1 scoop (20g) twice daily. This 1.1lb bucket is a 25 day supply, coming out to $1.68 per day.

Electrolyte

Favorite Supplement: KERx Restore SR

Reasons: Kentucky Equine Research has developed well-formulated, effective products and Restore SR is no exception. Providing a balanced amount of sodium, chloride, potassium, and magnesium similar to the ratio of minerals lost through sweat, this supplement replaces exactly what your horse needs. The impressive formula has a unique slow-release mechanism that prevents spikes in the body while also allowing the minerals to be available for a longer period of time. This means longer lasting hydration, making it a great choice for travel, endurance rides, and even daily use depending on your horse's workload.

Amount Per Day/Price: Feed 30-120g per day. This bucket is a 37-150 day supply, coming out to $0.35 - $1.76 per day.

Vitamin/Mineral

Favorite Supplement: Horse Guard Vitamin-Mineral Supplement

Reasons: Another great Horse Guard product! This is one of the most comprehensive vitamin-mineral formulas on the market. It has chelated minerals, pharmaceutical-grade vitamins, and food- grade carriers that ensure the nutrients are bio-available, meaning they can actually be utilized by your horse. This formula also contains selenium, a trace mineral not typically included in supplements but often lacking from diets. It also provides pre and probiotics, encouraging a healthy gut so your horse truly can feel their best from the inside out.

Amount Per Day/Price: Feed 2oz. for a 1000lb horse. This bag is an 80 day supply, which comes to only $0.46 a day.

Multi-Purpose

Favorite Supplement: Adeptus Nimble Mega-Nutrient

Reasons: Adeptus combines science with practical knowledge to give your horse what they need to look and feel their best. All supplements have been evaluated for palatability, efficacy, safety, and stability, creating a trustworthy brand. Nimble in particular is exceptionally comprehensive and covers seven bases of horse health. In a flaxseed and prebiotic base for digestibility, Nimble supports joints, tendons/ligaments, coat, and hooves while also providing balanced vitamins and minerals, antioxidants, and omega-3 fatty acids. With no alfalfa or excess sugar, this supplement is ideal for most horses. Nimble has U.S. Pharmaceutical Grade Ingredients so you can be sure that your horse is getting quality nutrition.

Amount Per Day/Price: Feed 2oz per day for maintenance. This container is a 30 day supply, which comes to $2.66 a day, but with 7-in-1 benefits.
